Background of the Study

Bush burning, the practice of setting fire to vegetation for land clearing or hunting, is a common activity in many parts of Nigeria. However, it has significant environmental and ecological consequences, such as soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and air pollution. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, bush burning is prevalent, particularly during the dry season. The government has implemented several interventions to control the practice, including public awareness campaigns, legislation, and enforcement of anti-burning policies. Despite these efforts, the effectiveness of these interventions remains unclear (Adamu & Musa, 2024). This study will examine the effectiveness of government interventions in controlling bush burning in Lafia, with a focus on policy implementation, public compliance, and the overall impact on environmental conservation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While government interventions to control bush burning are well-documented, the persistent occurrence of bush fires in Lafia suggests that these efforts may not be as effective as intended. Non-compliance with regulations, lack of enforcement, and insufficient public education may contribute to the continued environmental damage caused by bush burning. This study aims to investigate the impact of government policies and interventions on bush burning in Lafia and provide recommendations for improving their effectiveness.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the effectiveness of government interventions in controlling bush burning in Lafia.

• To evaluate the level of public compliance with anti-burning regulations in Lafia.

• To identify the challenges faced by the government in enforcing bush burning control measures in Lafia.

1.4 Research Questions

• To what extent have government interventions been effective in reducing bush burning in Lafia?

• What is the level of public compliance with regulations aimed at controlling bush burning in Lafia?

• What challenges do government agencies face in enforcing anti-bush burning measures in Lafia?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Government interventions have had a limited effect on reducing the incidence of bush burning in Lafia.

• H2: Public compliance with anti-bush burning regulations in Lafia is low.

• H3: Enforcement challenges, such as lack of resources and inadequate monitoring, hinder the effectiveness of bush burning control measures in Lafia.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides an assessment of the effectiveness of government interventions in addressing a critical environmental issue in Lafia. By evaluating policy implementation, compliance, and enforcement challenges, the study will contribute to the development of more effective strategies for controlling bush burning and promoting environmental sustainability (Adamu & Musa, 2024). The findings will be useful for government agencies, environmental organizations, and community leaders working to reduce bush burning in Nasarawa State.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the impact of government interventions in controlling bush burning in Lafia Local Government Area. It will examine government policies, public compliance, and enforcement mechanisms, but will not cover other environmental policies or practices outside the scope of bush burning. Limitations include potential challenges in measuring compliance and assessing the long-term effects of policy interventions.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Bush Burning: The practice of intentionally setting fire to vegetation, often for agricultural purposes or to clear land.

• Government Interventions: Actions taken by the government to regulate, mitigate, or eliminate harmful environmental practices.

• Public Compliance: The degree to which individuals or groups adhere to rules and regulations set by government authorities.
